KDHX Volunteer Spotlight: Doug

Doug
Co-host of Rock N' Roll Damnation
Monday, 5-7 a.m.

Show Description:
Deep cuts, emotional rescues, and terrific tracks spanning the 1950s-2020s. Rock N’ Roll Damnation is for all the rockers out there from young to old as woven throughout their lives. The 7-year-old whose record is AC/DC’s Dirty Deeds on vinyl, repeated VHS rentals of Led Zeppelin's Song Remains the Same, midnight release of In Utero, missing work to wait for the Ticketmaster line at Sears; the Doors movie at the Theater, album parties with your friends, Grohl and Smear at Riot Fest Chicago, etc.

What would would you like to share with KDHX listeners and readers about yourself?
I am originally from the Chicago area and have my parents to thank for my love of music as they always had it on as a kid. I graduated from my mom's Billy Joel and Elton John records to AC/DC and the Who at the age of 8--and then Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, and Dinosaur Jr (and many others). I am also a huge listener of jazz (especially Chicago and NY avante garde / free) and more traditional artists like Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, and Charles Mingus. I love the Chicago blues also--and Chicago has had a huge influence on me. I regularly would go see Kahil El Zabar and his various jazz bands when living in the City of Chicago in the mid-90s.

Please describe the inspiration for your show.
Our inspiration is the presence of rock through one's life and bringing that to our audience. Our audience is all the rockers out there from young to old--as woven throughout their lives. The 7-year-old whose record is AC/DC's Dirty Deeds on vinyl, repeated VHS rentals of Led Zeppelin's Song Remains the Same, midnight release of In Utero, missing work to wait in the Ticketmaster line at Sears; the Doors movie at the Theater, album parties with your friends, Grohl and Smear Riot Fest Chicago, etc. Rock is the soundtrack to your life, our audience is diverse, passionate, and deeply in love with all rock eras and bands, and that love is celebrated on our show and with our fans.

Why does being a KDHX DJ matter to you?
Being a DJ for me is about building up people and the community – because music and community have been transformational for me and my family. We believe music and community radio can bring people together. My daughter and I have a show on KDHX on Monday mornings and we are excited to bring great vibes to all at the start of the week and build up St. Louis in the process. KDHX is an invaluable resource to the St. Louis metropolitan area and its arts/media/radio scene and beyond!

Why is KDHX important to you and to your community?
I believe KDHX is important and irreplaceable to our community, because music as an art form is inspirational and irreplaceable, and KDHX is an incredible vehicle that delivers the best in music from all genres, while allowing for the creativity of its DJs, as muses and curators, to braid music with community. Art and media is a bedrock to St. Louis. St. Louis first and foremost is a music city, with its pulse, heartbeat, and heartache, deeply steeped in the echoes of blues, jazz, soul, r&b, gospel, and rock and roll. There is no other resource on radio other than KDHX that mirrors us as a City and as a region, while emotionally filling the empty spaces with great music.
